About NYLI

The Northeast Youth Leadership Training Institute is a 3 day, 2 night program dedicated to empowering youth ages 14 to 21 to become leaders in creating healthier communities. The program’s long-term goal is to provide youth with the capacity to become leaders in their own communities around health issues that affect them and their peers.

What is the NYLI Model?

It’s about:

·         building confidence and learning new skills

·         being engaged in your community and making a difference as leaders

·         learning to work with, not for, adults in your community (whether it be a neighborhood, church, school, etc.) to help facilitate positive change

·         having a vision and a plan for being active in your community

The NYLI model supports this philosophy by providing youth with “Champions” in their communities. Champions are adult volunteers who actively support youth who have been motivated by NYLI to take a leadership role in their community. Champions will continue to work with NYLI “graduates” to implement plans for taking a leadership role developed during their participation in the Institute. Champions and youth will continue to receive assistance and support from NCHC and YAR for 6 months to 1 year following the Institute.

Levels of Participation

Youth Participants

Have you ever wanted to make something happen whether it's teaching your friends about the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs, raising money for sick children, inspiring your friends to get involved with a cause, starting a new program in your school, church, etc.?

Basically, anything that energizes and motivates you and does some good. Would you like to learn how to make that desire or dream a reality?? NYLI offers youth a place to build confidence, learn skills, develop a plan, and become leaders.

Champions

This unique role is perfect for those adults that have an interest in volunteering to mentor youth in a concrete, project-based, and time-specific way. Champions will help facilitate the implementation of the plans the youth participants developed during the Institute for taking on leadership roles in their communities.

The time commitment for Champions is 6 months to 1 year, starting July 2008. Champions will also be expected to attend a 1.5 – 2 hour action planning workshop with the youth at the Institute on a day during the Institute to be determined. They are not expected to attend the full Institute.
